Funding campaign materials

Lobbying Parliamentarians materials

ACOSS has developed these materials to assist organisations lobby parliamentarians in our campaign to get Governments across Australia to commit to funding a successful equal pay case before Fair Work Australia. These were distributed to ACOSS members and politicians in a delegation ACOSS led to Canberra in June for a series of meetings with key federal ministers, MPs and Senators.

We continue to urge all sector organisations and employers to join the call for the Commonwealth and all other governments to commit to fully funding the outcome of the case. Documents:

GENDER UNDERVALUATION IN THE COMMUNITY SECTOR - July 2012
In its interim decision in the community sector equal pay case, Fair Work Australia found that community sector workers are being underpaid as the result of the gendered dimensions of the predominantly female community sector workforce. The decision found that:
i. the sector does not have equal remuneration compared to state and local government employees; and
ii. this is significantly due to the gender of the workforce in the sector.
FWA is now seeking submissions from the parties on the extent to which wage rates in the SACS industry are lower than they would otherwise be because of gender considerations.

Why does the extent of the gender undervaluation matter?
Fair Work Australia only has power to deal with gender based undervaluation in this case. FWA has accepted the arguments the sector has long been making, that our work is significantly undervalued. In order to provide an industrial remedy, FWA needs evidence about the extent to which the undervaluation can be attributed to gender. Establishing strong principles and a process to deal with this undervaluation matters before FWA. It also matters for the long term viability and effectiveness of social services.
